The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them truly understand the content, and to help build the student's self confidence. I would characterise my strengths as the following: - Patient: I am a very patient teacher, and don't mind explaining the same concept multiple times in different ways—as it's important to be…

I have been teaching math for many years, and I have worked with students of varying skill levels. I encourage all of my students to solve problems based on real-life examples, and I help them explain their solutions in their own words. This approach helps them tackle any type of problem they may face and develop a deeper appreciation for the…

To help them become confident and self-sufficient in the subject! I work to fill the gaps in knowledge that often hold students back from achieving all they are capable of. I know what it's like to struggle with maths in high school and so relate to students who may be less confident. My approach is to break exercises down into little parts,…

Varying teaching methods to provide students with a greater opportunity to learn is important. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. Students will be more successful…

Build confidence, so that even when a student gets stuck with a difficult question or problem, like in an exam, they'll have a go rather than hit a wall. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel comfortable and capable of learning new things. Often tutoring can seem like babysitting, but if a tutor can make the student feel like it's an opportunity instead of a task, it helps the student put their best effort into learning. The tutor should also understand the…

To reiterate, I think personalization is a key facet of good tutoring. Every student is likely to have different needs and learning styles, and it is important to adapt course material and teaching style to best suit their needs, while clarifying concepts effectively and accurately. Also, making the concept/subject appear less daunting and more…

The most important thing is to inspire confidence and a love for learning. It's not just about teaching the material but also about empowering students to believe in their own abilities. Before starting the tutoring sessions, it is crucial to evaluate the student's current level of understanding of the subject matter. This allows the tutor to create a personalized plan to address the student's weaknesses and reinforce their strengths. Being patient and supportive is also essential. I think improving a student's confidence is the most important thing. I've just seen so many students in the past give up when they see a problem, but if you can teach them to push past this it helps them in this class and in future problem solving scenarios. Have patience and make sure that the student actually understands what they're saying. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
