Encouraging then and making the students more confident and independent in the way they approach problems. I believe a tutor should give them the tools so that the pupils can make their path on developing the necessary skills. I can quickly connect with the students and look for their needs and how is the best way for them to approach the…

Aside from helping a student work on topics they might otherwise struggle with, the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe that they can succeed in the topics or subjects they struggle with. I make it a point to never pass judgment on another student or make them feel bad about themselves because they are stuck on a topic,…

Even if my teaching plan for students are well-planned, poor communication would be counter-productive because students not understand what I want to say. - Communication and interpersonal skills - Patience - Analytic skill - Time management…

I want my students to be able not only to learn the given subjects/materials but also to learn how to learn. It might sound insignificant, but students will be lifelong learners, so they have to find out their learning styles, how to learn, how to manage their learning, etc. That's why it is important for me to also help them learn about…

For me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there and help the student when he/she has some difficulties with his/her studies. Trying to find the best way to explain the topic or lesson and make it understandable. Also, establishing contact with the student is extremely important to make him/her feels comfortable and…

Becoming a lifelong role model is crucial in supporting students. Many of them keep their issues hidden, and as adults, we may overlook or avoid addressing these concerns. Some students might not even recognize they have problems. Being a dependable role model and a safe space for them are among the most vital ways to help them. Patience: Having…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

For the less motivated students, a tutor can help them gain interest in the subject, which I think is the most important thing for a learner. For most of the students, a tutor should be a guide to lead them to pick up knowledge points bit by bit and finally have a general clear map of them. I am quite good at being with people, no matter what…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

The most important things a tutor can do is knowing the right way to support and motivate the student to grow academically. Tutors should try their best to inculcate a certain level of intrinsic motivation in their students, rather than having students work just because the teacher or tutor says so. This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Inside FootscrayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia focused on solving problems involving the volume of cylinders and explored area and circumference of circles, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

In Year 8, Liam practiced linear relationships by plotting equations on coordinate grids and worked through questions on finding equations of lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ava reviewed angle types—such as complementary and supplementary angles—and estimated degrees using protractors for hands-on learning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 trigonometry, a student hesitated to attempt challenging problems, focusing mainly on familiar examples—this limited exposure to multi-step scenarios.

For a Year 3 multiplication task, over-reliance on counting rather than recalling tables slowed progress and led to errors ("Need to learn by heart the multiplication table").

In Year 10 data evaluation, incomplete practice with interpreting graphs meant patterns were sometimes missed.

During Year 8 decimal work, one tutor noted: "Need to be more careful while counting the number to put the decimal point and index number." These process gaps often left some questions unanswered or concepts only partly grasped in-session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Footscray noticed a big shift with one high school student who, after struggling to estimate angles without tools, now confidently judges them by eye and checks his work independently.

Another Year 9 student who used to hesitate when stuck on problems has started raising questions mid-session and fixing mistakes right away, instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally cleared up confusion about range and median—after weeks of guessing, he now explains the difference out loud before solving each problem.

Last week, one finished all his homework in just 20 minutes and asked for extra exercises.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Barkly Campus.
