I consider encouragement and patience as the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student. As school can be stressful, being supportive and persistent toward the student is beneficial and can make them more receptive to wanting to learn. Having patience is also very important for tutors as some students may not understand a concept and…

Helping the student not only improve their studies, but learn how to better study and learn independently when at home/in school. It's one thing to be working in a short tutoring session, and another to continue the work in ones own time. I am able to empathise with students and work with them on how they learn best (which teaching methods and…

A tutor should get a student to THINK! and not rush to find an answer! This means to get the students to be able to focus on the content at hand and to use various ways to remember the content and apply the content in different ways to solve problems in the real world. Life experience/work…

I believe patience, respect and empathy is highly necessary to be able to connect with a student so that they can understand a difficult topic. Therefore, being able to frame a difficult topic in a way that is easy to understand enables the student to not only be confident in the subject matter but also allows them to find a way to approach the…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do is create a close enough relationship with the student so that the student believes they can trust the tutor and not be scared to ask questions, thus maximising the help they can recieve. I think my strength as a tutor is that I was able to get my high grades in high-school through diligence…

Making the student feel comfortable enough to ask what they might consider a silly or 'dumb' question. To me a student must be able to tell me they don't understand so that I can do my job properly. Knowing that they are allowed to make mistakes is important to a learning process and for that they need to be comfortable. Being able to recognise…

In my opinion , a maths tutor should be capable of understanding the child's situation and help them with kindness. They should treat children without judging them. They should keep trying to teach children the difficult materials and should repeat every methods till they became good at it. I am really good at my subject and I am sure that I can…

Helping them complete their work is part of the job. However, the most important thing is making sure students are relaxed. If they are getting overwhelmed they shouldn't be pushed because then it'll make them feel like they can't do it. So tackling their weaknesses at a realistic pace will help them not feel pressured to understand straight away.…

As a maths tutor, I believe that it is important to be patient with students and allow them to grasp the concept on their own, albeit with a firm guiding hand, as I find that this allows the pupil to adopt a more proactive and self-sufficient mindset. My experience with this method often found a great deal of pride and accomplishment within both…

Personally, I believe that a good tutor is more than just a teacher; they guide students based on their specific needs. They consider various factors, such as a student's learning style, and tailor their instruction to them. They also instil executive study skills in students, which will benefit them both academically and in life. Being a great…

Local Reviews

Verity improved a great deal with her maths last year. Her results from school where excellent and have thanked Peter very much. He did such an awesome job in tutoring her.
Maree, McDowall

Inside McDowallTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Molly revised perimeter and area for various shapes using practice questions, while Year 8 Lerato focused on identifying PEEL paragraph elements in her English essay and also asked about calculating simple percentages.

In Year 10, Hayden worked through feedback on his analytical essay draft, specifically developing arguments and refining grammar.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in McDowall showed hesitation with independent problem-solving, particularly when she struggled to approach complex index law questions without prompts. This reliance on step-by-step guidance led to unfinished homework and missed opportunities for feedback before assessments.

In Year 8 English, one student's draft essays were often completed just before deadlines—meaning there was little time left for editing or refining arguments.

Another senior chemistry student frequently paraphrased resources incorrectly in assignments, risking unintentional plagiarism.

In a Year 6 maths session, getting frustrated after small mistakes meant focus was lost mid-task and required extra encouragement to return to the work at hand.

Recent Achievements

One Mcdowall tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help now talks through each step of complex trigonometry problems aloud, catching more mistakes before they happen.

Another high schooler recently finished her chemistry report independently, having previously struggled to organise her research; she came to the session with specific questions written out and only needed minor guidance.

Meanwhile, a primary student who found rotations overwhelming last term was able to recall and apply the correct sequence for rotating shapes on her own after practicing breaking down the process into smaller steps.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Sarah is great the tutoring is going really well and Anjelika looks forward to her classes :)

Just thought I would let you know Eden received the highest mark in her math class for the year common test.  The teacher was very impressed and I had one very happy daughter.

We are very happy with Matt , he is a good personality match for James and he is finding the sessions most valuable.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Everton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like McDowall State School.
