Listen - to what the student has to say. When someone gets to explain a topic, I know they are confident about what they learned. It also allows me to see if they truly got to grasp the subject. Watch - the student's body language. It gives away so much on how they are feeling about a topic. It allows you to gauge if they really are…

Instilling confidence is the most important thing I could do as a tutor for my student. Because my end goal is for them to believe in their ability to learn new material even without my guidance. Once your student feels confident, they tend to perform holistically better. Even in subjects they were already doing well in to begin with. My ability…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build confidence in their students. This means not just helping them understand the material, but also encouraging them to believe in their own abilities. Creating a supportive and positive learning environment is crucial. I believe one of these to be to build confidence in students by praising their way of thinking and problem solving. A good learning attitude promotes good motivation to tackle future topics and most importantly enjoy the process. A part of this comes down to creating a safe environment and encourage learning through error and taking risks, as is…

A tutor apart from offering services of tutorship has a huge impact a student's life in the following ways: 1. Encourage students to apply his/her independent mind and motivate them to think out of the box. 2. Go out of the way in exploring different options to teach the same course/study material. 3. Be available for your students and…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is the willingness of a tutor to support these students in their studies by giving them ongoing assistance and feedback, but also being able to help them with any personal issues/troubles they are having. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is support their progress, regardless of their pace. In the end, it's more important that the student is understanding, rather than cramming a concept and forgetting it in the middle of a test. It is also essential that the tutor may express to the child the significance of the subject,…

I believe students are the future of our world. If we want a better future, we must contribute towards students' development. A tutor can not only teach but shape the future by providing education to the students as education is the key. Teaching students not only enables them to think innovative but also develops problem solving skills. Solving…

I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. The first one is developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so that a student can confidently solve problems that they haven't encountered before or when no one is there to guide them. And the second one is fostering a positive learning environment,…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
