Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

As all students learn differently its crucial to be capable of creatively and freely thinking so that you can implement different techniques to help them. Patience, Studious and Creative…

Obviously bumping up grades. But before that comes there is the massive component where the tutor is able to let the student feel like they actually know what they're doing. Instilling confidence in someone and helping them to not feel dumb can change the way they approach learning and improve everything about their academic life. Coming from…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I…

As teachers have to look over a lot of students, students who fall behind or struggle with conventional learning styles only get a limited amount of help. This is where the tutor jobs come in and provide a customized learning experience that is ideal and unique to each student. Tutors are like safety inspectors where they 1. Recheck their…

I think one of the most important things is showing that mistakes are ok and that everybody makes them. If I ever make one whilst teaching, I always use it as a teaching lesson. I also think building up their confidence is so important, if they lack confidence that they can't do it they will struggle so much more. I always try to relate to them…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is answer any questions the student has—no matter how small—so they never feel stuck or embarrassed to ask. It’s also really important to help them feel more comfortable with the subject and maybe even start to enjoy it. If a tutor can make learning feel less stressful and more…

One duty includes building interpersonal relationships with students and creating a supportive environment so that learners will feel comfortable and encouraged to engage in lessons. Be encouraging and supportive, understanding that mistakes and errors are a part of the learning process. Additionally, tutors should encourage a lot of questions from the student. Tutors should also not generalise their teaching but rather tailor it to each student, and if possible make it enjoyable. Lastly, it is important to be on the same page…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them more interested even in the hardest topics. Turning the lessons into fun is the key. Inside SouthportTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Mason worked on mastering the application of the product, chain, and quotient rules for differentiation, including tackling real-world optimisation problems using second derivatives.

Year 12 student Alex focused on logarithmic and exponential equations—reviewing their graphs and properties—and practised applying integration techniques to calculate areas between curves.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Georgia consolidated her understanding of trigonometric functions by practising sine and cosine rules with diagrams, then applied these skills to find unknown sides and angles in non-right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often mixed up multiplication strategies, as noted: "He breaks down 12x7 as 10x7 + 2x7, but sometimes switches methods mid-question," which led to confusion and extra time spent clarifying steps.

In Year 4 maths, one student relied heavily on concrete tools for translating word problems but struggled to move toward abstract equations without these aids.

For a Year 11 student preparing for exams, incomplete summary notes made it difficult to recall earlier content; this resulted in confusion during multi-topic revision sessions and slower progress on mock tests.

Confidence would waver after encountering tough exponential questions in senior maths, sometimes stopping them from completing solutions even when their working was correct.

Recent Achievements

A Southport tutor recently noticed Jakob, a Year 5 student, making a big leap by tackling decimal homework questions on his own—just last month he needed step-by-step guidance for each one.

In Year 10 maths, Rachel started speaking up and sharing her ideas aloud during lessons instead of waiting for prompts; this is the first time she's shown that kind of initiative.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student took it upon himself to search out the trapezoidal rule independently to solve an unfamiliar calculus problem, showing real growth in self-driven problem-solving.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Oh, we're very happy! Sup is a delight. Seb will, I expect be back up to average in no time and we may well then look at Sup for our 7yo, when Seb finishes. Seb is only slightly below average and at a selective school, so there's not much work to be done, but, Sup really is great.

Thanks for checking. Hendrik thinks Jacob is "cool" and is very positive about the tutoring. We are definitely going ahead.

Matthew is very happy with Anthony.  From the first day with Anthony, Matt realised what a great help Anthony will be with his better understanding of his studies in maths. Thank you for you help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Southport School.
