I belive the tutor could not just provide expertise on the subject to the student but could aslo , mould/ shape the student in the best way possible. As the main duty of the teacher is to prepare their students for challenges ahead to come in real professional life . The tecaher helps students to gradually boost their confidence and sometimes…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is the willingness of a tutor to support these students in their studies by giving them ongoing assistance and feedback, but also being able to help them with any personal issues/troubles they are having. This translates to being a friendly and approachable tutor, much like a friend…

Believe in him or her. I think that all the students are intelligent but sometimes they need only someone who encourage them to do more. It’s not a teacher’s job to judge; a teacher is a guide that help you to become an adult I’m patience, schematic , I try to simplify a topic as much as possible. I like using a lot of colors, specially…

From my personal experience, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being their friend; not forcing their own way of approaching the topic, but rather understanding the view of the student and catering to that. Helping students to understand a concept, enabling them to answer questions with proper understanding, rather than…

I believe that consistent support and assistance for students whenever they require assistance (be it in or outside of tutoring sessions) is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I also believe that spending the time to understand the student's needs and developing a friendly relationship with the student will allow the…

In my opinion, the most important thing is not only to answer doubts and impart knowledge but also to stimulate students' interest and love for learning through the tutoring process, so that they can also drive self-learning in their future study and life. I think my strong point is that I can make study plans for each student according to their…

I believe that it is extremely pivotal to build a strong foundational understanding for the student on the subject I am teaching. Instead of purely teaching them to memorise and get good grades, a good tutor ensures key concepts are communicated clearly and concisely in a nurturing manner, according to the pace of the student. While it is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them not the final answer to a question, but in detail the method in which that answer was obtained because ultimately in a test situation the student will have a completely new question in which they have to be confident in using their own methods and not simply memorised answers. I…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, foster independent learning, and create a positive learning atmosphere. A tutor shouldn’t just provide answers, but instead guide students towards developing problem-solving skills and effective study habits. It’s also important to be encouraging and…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

There are many important things when it comes down to tutoring a student, but to state a few in their order of importance: 1. Building confidence of a student 2. Motivating them to study, and to help find the balance between play and studies, as playing and hobbies are very critical at this stage of life. 3. Being a great mentor, clarifying…

I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

The most crucial things a tutor should have are: First, the tutor's own capability to solve the questions, to organise their time and to work under pressure. Second, to become a good tutor, a person has to be able to communicate and convey their ideas fully while being able to listen and understand what is in the student's mind. Last but not…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
