I believe the most important thing I can do for a student is being able to work with the students strengths and struggles when teaching new topics as well as making a safe space for them to ask questions and let me know if they are still not quite understanding the content. My greatest strength as a tutor is that I am a very patient person, I am…

As I have mentioned above, it is essential for tutors to engage with their students and embrace them emotionally. Patience and calmness are also important for tutors to have. Being a tutor does not only require patience and knowledge, but also an easy going trait. Making the subjects fun and appealing to children is the main skill tutors need to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not only improve their understanding and comprehension of content but to also improve their confidence in themselves and bringing enjoyment to learning. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe and supportive space where students can learn at their own pace. In school, students may feel pressured to keep up or worry that they are “not good enough†which can impact their confidence and mindset. A tutor should be patient and encouraging, making it clear that…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make sure the students like the subject, when the students do not like a certain subject due to hard to understand or some other factors, this will result in a repulsion of the subject and creating a negative impact on them. Be patient and understanding because majority of students want to understand but they cannot, which is why we have to explain slowly to make sure that they are not pressured and embarrased. I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

Inside MelbourneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Jason reviewed key concepts in Trigonometry, including complementary angles, and practiced differentiation using first principles to prepare for a Math Methods test.

Year 12 student worked through complex numbers in polar form (cis(theta)) and tackled textbook exercises, also revising inverse trigonometric functions ahead of an upcoming Specialist Mathematics assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student covered the basics of linear equations—solving for one variable and graphing lines—and explored atomic structure in Chemistry, focusing on subatomic particles and electron shells.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed in a recent Year 11 session, which left gaps in understanding and slowed progress with new calculus problems—"please do the HW:), as it'll really strengthen your understanding," noted the tutor.

In another Year 12 lesson, revision focused mainly on familiar question types; less time was spent on more challenging trigonometric proofs and complex numbers, limiting exposure to higher-level exam material.

For a Year 4 student tackling long division, feeling stressed when unable to solve problems instantly led to hesitation in practice. In these moments, avoidance or incomplete work delayed deeper confidence and fluency.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Melbourne recently noticed Jason, a Year 11 student, moving from hesitancy to actively asking thoughtful questions while tackling challenging Trigonometry problems—a big step up from his earlier quietness.

In another high school session, Thomas started out unsure with negative numbers but now solves linear equations more confidently after connecting operations across Math and Chemistry.

Meanwhile, a younger student, Charlie, who used to get stuck on addition and subtraction, can now work through most sums without help.

Last week, Jonas—previously distracted—chose mental maths strategies himself and completed all division tasks unaided.
