I believe some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is being understanding and having great listening and observational skills. Learning can be challenging for some people and this can be frustrating, so having someone understanding help can put students at ease and facilitate learning. Additionally, the listening and…

Having received a lot of tutoring growing up, I know first-hand how challenging it can be to grasp difficult concepts. The tutors who made the biggest difference for me were patient, supportive, and able to adapt to my learning style. They not only helped me understand content but also built my confidence and sparked my curiosity. That experience…

Listen carefully to how they think about the subject - what is it that they struggle with? Why do they like/not like the subject? What do they understand and what exactly do they need assitance with? As tutors we do not want to assume how students feel or what they do or do not know. Be a good listening ear for them and available when they need…

The most important thing a tutor can do for students is give them time and attention that they simply cannot receive in class. It gives the student the objective support and help they need to succeed in the subject as well as gives the student the confidence within themselves to go into tests and exams and succeed. In my opinion, the most important thing for a tutor is not to teach the subject material in a study session, but to be able to help the student improve his understanding capability so the student can do topics on his own. In my experience, if I was able to help understand some topic to a student, it felt good. But it felt even better, when the…

The main job of a tutor is to transmit knowledge and assist students in solving problems, however, what I believe is most important is that tutors can create a comfortable learning environment for students. active. When in school, a teacher can teach many students at once, so sometimes it is not possible to focus on supporting each student…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate their successes, big or small. It can be difficult for some students to maintain a love for learning, or even just develop a motivation to study more, so I believe that a tutor is a pillar of support for the student throughout their learning. A tutor can give that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is buiding their confidence and enjoyment of a subject that they perhaps once struggled with. I believe that if a student comes into a tutoring session each day begrudgingly with absolute hatred of a subject they won’t absorb what is being taught as well because they’d rather be somewhere…

Inside MelbourneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Jason reviewed key concepts in Trigonometry, including complementary angles, and practiced differentiation using first principles to prepare for a Math Methods test.

Year 12 student worked through complex numbers in polar form (cis(theta)) and tackled textbook exercises, also revising inverse trigonometric functions ahead of an upcoming Specialist Mathematics assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student covered the basics of linear equations—solving for one variable and graphing lines—and explored atomic structure in Chemistry, focusing on subatomic particles and electron shells.

Recent Challenges

Homework was not completed in a recent Year 11 session, which left gaps in understanding and slowed progress with new calculus problems—"please do the HW:), as it'll really strengthen your understanding," noted the tutor.

In another Year 12 lesson, revision focused mainly on familiar question types; less time was spent on more challenging trigonometric proofs and complex numbers, limiting exposure to higher-level exam material.

For a Year 4 student tackling long division, feeling stressed when unable to solve problems instantly led to hesitation in practice. In these moments, avoidance or incomplete work delayed deeper confidence and fluency.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Melbourne recently noticed Jason, a Year 11 student, moving from hesitancy to actively asking thoughtful questions while tackling challenging Trigonometry problems—a big step up from his earlier quietness.

In another high school session, Thomas started out unsure with negative numbers but now solves linear equations more confidently after connecting operations across Math and Chemistry.

Meanwhile, a younger student, Charlie, who used to get stuck on addition and subtraction, can now work through most sums without help.

Last week, Jonas—previously distracted—chose mental maths strategies himself and completed all division tasks unaided.
